'The Fosters' stars say playing an interracial lesbian couple is no big deal

On the ABC Family show “The Fosters,” Teri Polo and Sherri Saum play one of the few interracial lesbian couples on prime time TV. So far, it seems audiences have noted the fact that they’re a same-sex couple more than they’ve noted the fact that they’re a mixed-race one.

But it’s not a big deal, they say. How do you prepare for playing a gay character? According to Polo and Saum, you do so the same way you would prepare for playing a straight character.

“I never thought to myself, ‘I am a biracial child of a….’ You know, you don’t live in your label — you just kind of live,” Saum said.
“It’s about love,” Polo says of preparing for her role. “I’ve loved before, so I can love again.” Who she loves in a fictional world doesn’t change any of that.
Check out what they had to say in advance of a new episode of “The Fosters,” which airs tonight on ABC Family at 8 p.m. ET.
