Meet Olga Olivares and Pilar Obeso, emerging designers from Mexico City. When they started their company, Taller Nu, they needed workers to craft the hip shoes they were designing. And they found help in an unlikely place: a nearby prison. The cost of labor was cheap, of course, but the two women saw just as many benefits in bringing specialized skills and work to a population of women with few options. It’s a win-win situation for all involved: Taller Nu found a focused, eager group of workers, and those workers found employment and a break from the monotony of captivity. We benefit too: the rest of us can buy their cool…well, just check them out yourself in the video above.
