Screen Actors Guild Awards celebrates women of color

On Sunday night, over in Hollywood, a pageantry of a different kind took place: The Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Among the most notable wins: “Orange is the New Black” for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series, Uzo Aduba from “Orange is the New Black” for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series, and Viola Davis from “How to Get Away with Murder” for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series.

In her speech, Davis took on some of the macro issues facing Hollywood, like diversity, lookism, and ageism.

These wins come on the heels of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, which made us wonder: Why is TV outpacing film when it comes to catching up with a changing America?
