Fusion’s own Leslie-Anne Frye got married in a mass ceremony in Florida. Here’s what she had to say about it:
Last week, Florida became the 36th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Four days later, 25 LGBT couples gathered at Unity on the Bay, a nondenominational church in Miami for a spectacular mass wedding.
For my wife Carthy and I, getting married at Unity on the Bay was an opportunity that couldn’t be missed. In the past 15 months, we’ve gotten hitched twice: a marriage in New York and a civil union in Florida. But this third time would be historic – and will at the very least be an awesome story to tell our kids!
We exchanged vows alongside Juan Del Hierro and his husband Thomas Grant, who along with six other same-sex couples sued the state of Florida for marriage equality in 2014. The road to marriage equality in the Sunshine State was met with tons of backlash, but relief came in the form of a Christmas miracle. Just days before the holiday, the movement’s most vocal opponent, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, backed off: “This Court is best situated to determine the reach of its own order.”
The Gay Rights Movement is this generation’s Civil Rights Movement, and my wife and I look forward to sharing this dramatic story of triumph, grit and determination with our kids – but for now, please watch the video for a glimpse into our big gay wedding!
