Shake it off: Taylor Swift on the message behind her newest single

Taylor Swift made a big announcement on Yahoo’s first ever worldwide live stream. After two years of her fans anxiously waiting for a new album, the 24-year-old announced that her fifth studio album, “1989” (named after her birth year) is set to drop on October 27th of this year. Her single, “Shake It Off” was released as a teaser prior to the album’s official release date.

In an interview with Fusion’s Alicia Menendez, Swift explained how her album evolved from an expression of her own personal experience to the hope that her experience is one that is shared by others.

“I want this song to go out in the world and not be about my critics,” Swift told Menendez. “I want it to be about the girl who’s criticizing someone in the 11th grade because she think her hair looks stupid and then that girl goes and cries in the bathroom because of it. These are the things that we go through in every stage of our life.”

For the Grammy-award-winning artist, the message behind the music is more powerful than a catchy melody…but after listening to “Shake It Off,” we’ll admit, that catchy melody helps too.
