Media coverage of Eric Garner case reveals a deeply divided country

The news coverage of the Eric Garner case has revealed a deep bifurcation in this country. If you happened on Mediaite’s homepage today, you’d have noticed a rare instance where practically the entire page was dedicated to one story. One Fox News headline read “Peter King doubles down on Garner: Loose cigarette laws justified for ‘quality of life,'” while New York Daily News’ cover was entirely blacked out except bold white text reading “We can’t breathe.” MSNBC ran a headline that said “GOP leader says there should ‘absolutely’ be hearings on Garner case.'” Overall, the media coverage showcased a divided country.

Fusion’s Alicia Menendez sat down with actor and political activist Gbenga Akinnagbe — who also starred on HBO’s “The Wire” — and political analyst Zerlina Maxwell to talk about the media’s reaction to the grand jury’s decision.

“The broken system is on display for everyone to see,” Maxwell said. “Black people have a very different lived experience than white Americans.”
