The reception for Gillian Robespierre’s debut feature “Obvious Child” has been overwhelmingly positive. At the center of that praise is the film’s star, Jenny Slate, whose performance brilliantly captures the complexities of having your life turned upside down and then trying to turn it right-side up again in the most wonderfully, hilariously, imperfect way.
Though the premise of the film centers around an unwanted pregnancy, Slate thinks the characters and the emotions are bigger than the plot line.
“I understand that the film has kind of been billed or spoken about as an abortion rom-com,” she told Fusion’s Alicia Menendez in an interview. “I think that’s really over simplifying it.”
