Senate Kills Warren Bill To Let Student Loan Borrowers Refinance

[Update, 06/11/14, 11:50 a.m. EDT: The Senate voted down a bill on Wednesday from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) that would have allowed about 25 million borrowers with older student loans to refinance at lower interest rates.]

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) talks to Fusion’s Alicia Menendez about the growing student debt crisis and how she is trying to to fix it. Warren introduced a bill that would give college graduates a chance to refinance their student loans at a lower rate. The money lost by lowering the interest rate would be offset by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans. Republicans say this bill is nothing more than a stunt to energize the Democrats ahead of the midterm elections, a claim Warren says is “just wrong.”
