Gina Rodriguez: The Next Jennifer Lawrence

If you haven’t heard of Gina Rodriguez…don’t worry, you will. The Hollywood Reporter named Rodriguez “The Next Big Thing,” and if you’ve ever seen one of her performances, it’s easy to understand why. Rodriguez first caught Hollywood’s attention with her performance in the 2012 Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee, “Filly Brown.” The performance was Rodriguez’s big break, with critics comparing her acting to chops to Oscar-winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence.

Her newest project, “Jane the Virgin,” is different from “Filly” in that it follows the life of young woman who is accidentally artificially inseminated, but it fits within Rodriguez’s criteria for roles that reject stereotypes and embrace the complexities of family, culture and identity.

In an interview with Fusion’s Alicia Menendez, Rodriguez explained why she took on the role.
“Jane is the first, second, generation Latino story,” she told Menendez. “She’s hard working, educated, going to school, trying to do everything that’s in her mind and I want little girls to be able to follow something like that.”
