This year, for the first time in 52 years, two competitors won the Scripps National Spelling Bee. After exhausting the organizers’ list of words–which included such conversational gems as “skandhas, “feijoada,” and “paixtle”–Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe were declared the champions.
For Sriram Hathwar, this was the second consecutive year in the finals. His winning word was “stichomythia.”
Fusion’s Alicia Menendez spoke to the two champions and presented them with another challenge: Celebrity names. There were some stumbles, but Hathwar and Sujoe got almost all of the names right, so we gave them the biggest challenge of them all: Spelling our host’s name correctly. SPOILER ALERT: Duh! They’re the national spelling bee champions, of course they got it right!
