The National Guard has been activated, a state of emergency in place, and Ferguson, Missouri, is bracing for more unrest. Any day now, a grand jury will announce whether it will charge police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.
We were in the area this weekend to see how activists and organizers were preparing. Some of them gathered indoors, training and preparing for acts of “militant non-violent civil disobedience.” Others were already in the street, staging “die-ins” and blocking traffic.
“Police brutality is happening all over the nation, right in front of our faces,” one organizer told a crowd. “For you guys, it happens to be a lot closer to home.”
