Senator Tom Coburn (R.-Okla.) has released his latest report on all the wasteful things the American taxpayers have funded in the past year. He cited numerous instances of government pork getting ladled into something called “scientific research.” As if that’s a real thing!
But there was one item noticeably missing from his list: The F-35. The fighter jet — which still does not technically exist in useable form — has cost the U.S. government more than a trillion dollars. Put another way, it has cost more than every item on Tom Coburn’s list, if you added up every item on his list and then multiplied the total by 16.
So why are we still unloading taxpayer dollars into a machine that, according to a report, “can’t turn, climb, or run?” Well, it’s a delightful story about something called “the military industrial complex” mixed with something called “no one in the government wants to admit they were wrong and wasted a trillion dollars on nothing.” Kal Penn and Nando Vila explain.
