Paul Mecurio split his late twenties between Wall Street and comedy clubs—talk about a 180-degree career move. Before that, his life seemed pretty set. He graduated with honors from Georgetown Law, used his JD to land a job as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer, and then climbed the ranks at an investment banking firm. All of that changed one night when he jokingly walked up to Jay Leno at a firm function to pitch some of his jokes. Mecurio went from writing jokes in his notebook during corporate meetings to writing jokes for “The Tonight Show” and “The Daily Show,” where he was a part of the original writing dream team. Fusion’s Alicia Menendez sat down with the comedian to discuss what it was like to live a double life, how he made the transition from corporate suit to laid-back comic, and asked the late-night veteran who he thinks should fill David Letterman’s shoes.
