Wasteland: A First Look

A ground-level view as protesters block streets in Hong Kong

One of the tactics employed by Occupy Central protesters in Hong Kong has been to block streets to stop government workers — including Hong Kong’s Chief Executive CY Leung — from getting to work.

When protesters are in the processing of taking over streets, they need to be on guard for tear gas or more, as such actions could provoke police into responding with force.

What is it like for a group of protesters to put themselves on the line and hold down a street in one of the world’s busiest commercial centers? To find out, Fusion followed student activists Ronald Kwong as he and his colleagues blocked a principal road near the government center.
