“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has been praised for its diverse cast, but turns out the creators and writers of the Golden Globe award-winning series didn’t necessarily set out to make any kind of statement.
“I love that they weren’t necessarily married to it being really ethnic or they didn’t set out with an agenda…To them it’s like no big deal which makes me emotional every time they talk about it,” Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Melissa Fumero told Fusion’s Alicia Menendez. “They just always say they wanted the people they wanted.”
Both Fumero and her co-star Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Detective Rosa Diaz on the show, were worried about a Latina casting quota. Even after they shot the pilot, the two actresses were nervous one of them would be fired because as Fumero puts it, “what network has two Latinas on a show.” Thankfully talent outweighed convention and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star-studded cast stayed intact.
Season 2 of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” premieres Sunday, September 28th on Fox.
