Fusion investigative reporter Mariana Van Zeller went where no journalist is going: deep into the heart of Mexico’s most dangerous region, the northwest state of Sinaloa. The state is home to the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel, and birthplace to its alleged leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Van Zeller spoke to Fusion’s Jorge Ramos about her drive into the Sinaloa mountains, and the stops along the way. The original purpose of the trip was to take a close look at Mexico’s manhunt for El Chapo since his escape from maximum security prison last month. But as Van Zeller and her team got further into the region, she told Ramos, the mission changed, and she became determined to track down El Chapo’s mother for an interview in the drug lord’s hometown of La Tuna, where she still resides.
“What happened next was completely unexpected,” Van Zeller said.
Tune in to Narcos, Guns & Money: Chasing El Chapo this Sunday @ 8 p.m. EST to find out more about the dangerous journey.
