Set in New York City in 1900, “The Knick” follows the lives of doctors and nurses at the fictional all-white-populated Knickerbocker Hospital.
Andre Holland plays Dr. Algernon Edwards, the hospital’s first black doctor. A Harvard-educated and well-trained surgeon, Dr. Edwards is on a mission to earn respect from his peers and his community.
“As soon as I read it, I thought, you know what, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a character drawn so beautifully and so complex. And I knew if I didn’t get it there would be a long line of other actors fighting for it,” Holland told Fusion’s Alicia Menendez.
They also discussed the lack of black youth in the entertainment industry, both in front of and behind the camera.
“I think there probably aren’t enough spaces for young black writers to develop their craft and skills and take chances on writing characters like this,” Holland told Menendez. “The business is what the business is and there just aren’t as many opportunities as I wish there were.”
