Fusion's Jorge Ramos on what he learned covering the 2016 race

There are hundreds of people running for president that you don't know about

Ohio Governor John Kasich became the latest presidential candidate to join the race for 2016 today, making him the 16th Republican officially vying for the party’s nomination.

As candidates continue to announce bids for the presidency, the playing field for 2016 is looking increasingly competitive across party lines. What most of us don’t realize, however, is that there are actually many more–hundreds more–candidates out there also trying to be the 45th POTUS. We’ve just never heard of them.

According to the FEC, anyone can submit a statement of candidacy, but only those who receive or spend more than $5,000 in campaign contributions are considered official candidates. Most of the nearly 500 “candidates” on the FEC web site have not yet reached that threshold, but still submitted their candidacy form to register.

“The time is meow to run for President,” reads the slogan for ‘demo-cat’ Limberbutt McCubbins; Jack Sparrow filed as an independent in June–apparently that’s his real name although his filing reads, “Captain Jack Sparrow” and he occasionally dresses up like the pirate; and Pogo Reese from San Antonio, Texas has a resume that includes “former licensed exotic dancer.”
