TFA is popular option for graduating seniors, but critics say they should stay away if they want to help kids.
Teach for America is one of the most widely respected service organizations in the country, placing over 30,000 teachers in classrooms in their 24-year history. But as prospective teachers prepare their applications for next fall, a number of critics are criticizing TFA, even calling on colleges to ban it from recruiting on campus.
Critics say TFA teachers aren’t prepared for the classroom and are taking the place of more experienced teachers. TFA says it’s committed to serving students and is listening to critics. They’ve focused on recruiting a diverse teacher corps and point to researching showing their teachers are highly effective.
