Cody Simpson’s come a long way from doing cover songs in his bedroom for YouTube. In fact, this summer marks the release of his debut album, “Free.”
“Honestly my life has changed drastically, but obviously, all in a very positive fashion,” Simpson says. “You know, to be able to live the life I’m living now, to be able to travel around the world and play music gigs, and relate to music and make people feel good. I’m just doing my best to find a nice balance.”
While he admits that balance can indeed get a little hard, Simpson’s positivity stays infectious. “I want to share a positive message,” he says, “as well and write about things that could mean something to a lot of people.”
It helps Simpson’s impact that he also has friends in high places. Recently he teamed up with Miley Cyrus, who created the artwork for his new single, “Flower.” The proceeds of the merchandise are going to the Happy Hippie Foundation, an organization that aims to help homeless youth.
“We’d spoken a lot about trying to do something together, and hopefully more so in the future,” Simpson says about Cyrus. “She has such an open mind. she doesn’t care what people think and she does a lot of good for the world and I’m very much in support of her Happy Hippie Foundation.”
It’s also no secret Simpson is dating supermodel Gigi Hadid — and he admits he writes songs specifically for her. Awwww.
“I learned a lot from my dad because he does that for my mom,” Simpson says. “I love to write poems and I love to write songs and it’s just a way for me to get out my feelings.”
(By the way, this is how cool Cody is — he thinks you should follow “Come Here and Say That” on your favorite social media platform. Don’t make him sad.)
