IUDs are really having a moment

CHST Banner

Here’s some trivia: What’s shaped like a “T,” made of golden copper metal, and can spend several years where the sun don’t shine? It’s an IUD! And it’s having a moment. (Even if not everyone really gets how they work — video proof here.)

And before fans of the diaphragm start sending hate mail, we’ll remind you all that the diaphragm already had its moment in the 1940s. That was back when it was called the “womb veil.” Awkward!

But, just like when Mariah Carey started calling herself Mimi to revive her career, the diaphragm was soon replaced by its version of Christina Aguilera — the pill.

We all know the pill had a multi-decade run, but did you know it was briefly replaced by the sponge, which had its own moment in the mid-1990s, when it was nationally celebrated by Elaine Benes.

And now, it’s the IUD’s time to shine! Not only is the IUD today’s most effective form of birth control, it’s also the hottest new trend in fashion jewelry, in the form of earrings. Earrings that are dangling off the earlobes of several politicians, lawmakers and activists around our country!

The earrings are being worn to raise awareness and garner support of a bill in Colorado that would provide $5 million in funding IUDs and other contraceptives for low-income women.

The most creative supporter of this bill is Colorado State Republican Representative and craftsman Don Corman, who made the earring into a lapel pin for his suit jacket.

“A redneck Republican wearing an IUD — it just doesn’t make sense, does it … seriously, though, I think this is one of the most important bills we are looking at,” Corman said.

So congratulations, IUD — you’re having a moment!
