Because what New York City FC needs right now is another transfer saga involving another wavering, aging high-profile European midfielder: Xavi’s coming to the Bronx! Except that he isn’t! But he is!
Exhibit A: a story in AS that begins “Xavi Hernandez is set to become a New York City FC player in 2016”. And the words “Xavi Hernandez” and “New York City FC” player are even in bold type, for the avoidance of any possible doubt or confusion.
Exhibit B: a report in Sport that starts “Xavi Hernandez has denied that he’s accepted a deal to move to New York City”.
Analysis: just because Xavi says that as of Wednesday he hasn’t signed up to shag fly balls with his feet in Yankee Stadium next year, doesn’t mean that he won’t. We know that there have been discussions between the two parties, we know he almost agreed to move last year, we know that NYCFC remain interested, we know that the idea of teaming him up with David Villa and partying like it’s 2010 is seductive, we know that aged 35, Xavi isn’t going to be at Barcelona much longer and has started only half of the team’s league matches this season.
Seems like the only real question is whether he joins this summer or next. For definite. Maybe.
