Borussia Dortmund is in crisis. Well, that was true a few weeks ago, when the club sat at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings. But a lot can change in a couple of weeks, especially when you have a manager who has consistently proven himself and a team of very talented players. Dortmund has both.
Today, Dortmund took on rivals Schalke 04, a team that was living near in the Bundesliga penthouse when Dortmund was toiling in the table’s slums, eating scraps of despair while people talked about revolution. But 90 minutes after today’s first whistle, Dortmund walked away with a 3-0 win and is now eight points off of a Champions League place. That’s an amazing turnaround, but not even the highlight of the day.
The highlight came after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring and celebrated by paying tribute to a superhero duo.
We’ve been here before with Aubameyang. Earlier this year, the Gabonese international whipped out a Spiderman mask after scoring during the German Super Cup.
Aubameyang’s superhero celebration didn’t even start in Germany. He pulled out the mask while celebrating at Saint-Étienne in Ligue 1 prior to his transfer to Dortmund.
Things seem to be getting back to normal with Dortmund. Masks are coming out, the team is relevant again, its Twitter account is no longer sad …
… and if Dortmund can go from last place to Champions League spot in five months, that may be one of the greatest non-military escapes ever in the history of forever.
