Delete Lampard, insert Gerrard: It’s MLS loan speculation time again!

August 2, 2014 January 15, 2015 — Reports are circulating that new NYCFC LA Galaxy signing Frank Lampard Steven Gerrard will return to the Premier League on loan.

Lampard Gerrard agreed terms to join Major League Soccer (MLS) after a storied career with Chelsea Liverpool, but is already thinking of returning home to stay fit during the MLS offseason.

Neither Lampard Gerrard nor his representatives have issued a statement on the record regarding the proposed loan move.

Asked whether there was a possibility of extending the Chelsea Liverpool legend’s contract at Stamford Bridge Anfield, Lampard’s Gerrard’s long-time coach Jose Mourinho Brendan Rodgers said:

“They were [offered new deals]. We were in this process until the end, but you arrive into a moment [where you ask] what’s the best for the team? What’s the best for the other players? What’s the best for them?

And it depends also on their mentality.

“Lampard and Ashley, they will be until the last day players to compete, to play every game, to be involved.

“I think they are happier – in spite of their love for Chelsea – in this new situation for them.

“The best way for competitive people like them to be happy, to enjoy the last part of their career, is to go and play.”

“He certainly knew my feelings on wanting him to be here. He has been a brilliant captain for me in my time here so, naturally, of course I wanted him to stay and be here. His role is slightly different; he still sees himself wanting to go on and play for a couple more years. Naturally, at this level that was maybe going to be tapered a little bit over the next couple of years. He wasn’t ready to move into coaching or anything like that yet. He still sees himself very much as a player, and when that time comes when he finishes and retires as a player then that’s maybe something we can look at.”

While there is already plenty of speculation as to where the former England international could end up if a loan materializes, heading back to Manchester City Liverpool seems the most likely option.

Asked for comment about the loan speculation, NYCFC coach Jason Kreis LA Galaxy president Chris Klein stated “For me, players that enter in the middle of the season are typical fails. The chances for those players to really contribute meaningfully in a second half of a season in MLS are very, very small.” that the Galaxy have never discussed a loan situation with Gerrard.
