Barcelona gave Messi, Neymar, and Suárez an extra day in South America and now they’re doubts for Sunday’s game

Will Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez play when Barcelona visits Real Sociedad tomorrow? Probably, but let’s play along with the Spanish press They’ve gone days, weeks even, without new stories to report (well, except this), so you can understand a bit of overreaction about an extended vacation.

That extended vacation ended Friday after Barcelona’s South American stars were given leave by Luis Enrique to return one day late from their year-end breaks. Javier Macherano was among that group, but he elected to return early, ensuring he’ll be ready for Barça’s Sunday trip to Anoeta. The attack’s “holy trinity?” Like right back Dani Alves, who also cashed in on Luis Enrique’s generosity, they trained on Friday, will have another session today, but are doubts tomorrow at La Real Sociedad.

With Barça only one point behind Real Madrid in La Liga, Luis Enrique’s decision has led to a series of what the fucks. Is this preferential treatment? Even if it was, why didn’t they just pull a Mascherano and come back early? And why would Barcelona risk dropping points on the road, potentially losing ground on Real Madrid (who holds a match in hand), just to give its players a slightly extended vacation?

There is, however, another possibility: That it just doesn’t matter. I suppose there’s the idea that if it affects the team at all, the players should have come back. We can debate the extent of the impact — big, small, insignificant — but it certainly won’t help.

Still, this is probably much ado about nothing. The odds of Luis Enrique intentionally undermining his team is pretty small. He’s not going to give the guys an extra day if he doesn’t think he can manage it. Perhaps that means Pedro starts at one players’ expense. Perhaps that means none of the three go 90 minutes. Regardless, the odds of Luis Enrique actually deciding “La Real? Meh,” are pretty low.

But I feel you, Spanish press. I’m bored, too. This winter break shit is crap. As an editor of this site, I take responsibility, but I’m pretty sure 20 of our last 40 posts have been about one of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, or Torres. In the soccer world, New Years is the worst.

Yeah, the extra day spent in South America can’t help, but if we had other things to talk about, this wouldn’t be an issue. Then again, I also wouldn’t have this blog.
