The numbers: records for club and country

Even before Landon Donovan takes the field for the last time in the weekend’s MLS Cup final, he’s already claimed almost every meaningful record in United States men’s soccer. When Sunday’s final whistle blows, he will be Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in goals and assists, with no player having notched more U.S. men’s national team goals than his 57:

The silverware: timeline of titles

For every team with which he’s spent significant time, Donovan’s not only won titles; he’s claimed multiple honors. Even with the United States, who he helped to a World Cup quarterfinal in 2002, Donovan has raised four confederations titles, the latest of which came just 17 months ago:

2001 – MLS Cup, San Jose Earthquakes
2002 – CONCACAF Gold Cup, United States
2003 – MLS Cup, San Jose Earthquakes
2005 – CONCACAF Gold Cup, United States
2005 – MLS Cup, LA Galaxy
2007 – CONCACAF Gold Cup, United States
2011 – MLS Cup, LA Galaxy
2012 – MLS Cup, LA Galaxy
2013 – CONCACAF Gold Cup, United States

The consistency

Over 14 years in Major League Soccer, Donovan has never failed to score at least six goals in a season. Only twice has he dipped below that threshold in the assists column:

The breadth

Via friendlies, Gold Cups, qualifiers and World Cups, Landon Donovan has scored goals in seven different countries on three different continents. On that list: the five goals he scored between Korea and South Africa in World Cups:

THAT goal

In aggregate, the raw numbers are devastating, but the introduction into any casual conversation about Landon Donovan may always be South Africa, the 2010 World Cup, and that goal against Algeria – the highlight of his contribution to U.S. Soccer:
