It’s been a big week for deleted tweets. Today, Schalke threw shade at collapsing rival Borussia Dortmund, a club that’s has gone from “this close to being equals with Bayern Munich” to “Holy shit, they’re going to be relegated and Jürgen Klopp is going to get violent.” Whoever tweeted this will either be made club president or be fired from a cannon out from the social media office. A legend, regardless.
This screenshot belongs in the Louvre. Future generations need to see it and learn how to appreciate the multiple layers of professional foulness before them. Start at the top, Bayern didn’t even get the respect of a mention here, they got a hashtag. That’s Schalke saying “You’re cool, but this isn’t about you.”
Then notice that neither of the Schalke handles involved are the club’s main account, @s04. The original tweet came from @s04_KSA, an unofficial account for Arabic- language fans. It was then retweeted — with extra salt — by @s04_EN, the team’s official English-language account. Essentially, Schalke’s little brothers went out and started a fight on their behalf. Outstanding.
Even better is the fact that the digital diss track highlights Schalke’s sixth place position like it’s something to brag about. Internet Rule No. 4,080: “Thou shall not publicly stunt from sixth place.” The whole thing is beautiful.
Unfortunately, the tweet was deleted, most likely at the request of a very stern phone call from Germany. The world would be a better place if more teams were this reckless. You win the day, Schalke. Jermaine Jones is proud of you.
