Ninety-five Ajax fans arrested in Paris

Thanksgiving travel plans took an ugly turn as 95 Ajax fans have been arrested in Paris since last night. International travel can be difficult, especially during a holiday week. Showing up to the French capital wearing ski masks, carrying iron bars and brass knuckles — apparently called “knuckledusters” in Europe — probably doesn’t help.

Ajax take on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League today. The two clubs’s supporters have a reported history of violence, so Ajax was limited to a traveling contingent of only 850. Forty-one of the Dutch old-timey weapons enthusiasts were released last night, with the rest remaining in custody. To Ajax’s credit, 89 percent of their fans have managed to stay out of jail – a fairly successful incarceration rate for European soccer.
