#SG25 No. 22 – Keisuke Honda: The emperor

Previous Home Next

Japanese attacking midfielder Keisuke Honda is one of the deadliest and coldest snipers in the business. No keeper is safe on a set-piece when he’s standing over the ball. Angle and distance are never a deterrent for Honda. The goal is always within range.

The 28-year-old from Osaka first made an international name for himself at Dutch club VVV-Venlo, becoming a fan favorite after leading the team back to the Eredivisie a year after relegation. A move to CSKA Moscow pushed Honda further into the spotlight. His dramatic goals in key moments would lead to a league title and two Russian Cups in three and a half seasons in Russia. Currently at AC Milan, the playmaker has contributed six goals and two assists through 11 league matches.

With his national team, Honda had earned the nickname “Emperor Keisuke” from Japanese supporters. As the driving force of his nation’s attack, Honda has pushed Japan to two World Cup qualifications, an AFC Asian Cup championship in 2011 and a Japanese Footballer of the Year honor the year prior.

Honda’s off the field style and demeanor are almost as sharp as his direct kicks. His game and his gear are both understated and overlooked. Everything about Honda is just cool and confident. Wherever he is, he projects a vibe that says to everyone in the room (or stadium), “This is dope, I know.” He seems like the kind of guy to walk down a red carpet and not say a word. Just pause every so often because he knows he’s the best dressed in the building and you want his picture.

Game day, it’s the same story. Whether stepping up for a free kick, sending a through-ball to a streaking teammate or in a 1-on-1 with some unfortunate defender, there never appears to be any doubt in the mind of Keisuke Honda, as though his motto was “Try everything.” If it works … of course it did. It’s what he meant to do. He is fearlessness without the flash. His actions say more for themselves than he ever could. There’s no reason for him to tell you what you already know.
