Steven Gerrard says he might leave Liverpool, but nobody really believes that

Steven Gerrard playing for any club other than Liverpool is totally unthinkable. Except that the man himself is thinking about it.

The slowly-fading 34-year-old’s deal is expiring at the end of the season and he’s yet to agree a new one and seems unsure how keen the club are to keep him. Or possibly, he feels relatively confident but slipped in a couple of dramatic lines as an aside in an interview that’s centered on Mario Balotelli – his bid to get Liverpool to hurry up and make their offer, and scare a fan base who wouldn’t want to contemplate a team without Gerrard. Hard to tell; there’s not much detail.

As things stand he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January. Gerrard and Frank Lampard renewing their much-loved and ever-so successful England midfield partnership at NYCFC? It could happen!

“I won’t be retiring this summer,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “I will play beyond this season. We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else. That’s Liverpool’s decision.”

Despite a flirtations with Chelsea and Real Madrid a decade or so ago, it’s the only club he has ever known since he was spotted by Liverpool scouts aged eight. If you cut him open his blood would be red. Just like Liverpool’s jerseys!
