This Is How Fans at El Zocalo Celebrated Mexico’s Three Goals

For 72 excruciating minutes, the make-or-break Group A match between Mexico and Croatia went scoreless. That all changed with a corner kick that saw Rafa Marquez, the 35-year-old captain and four-time World Cup participant, head the Brazuca past Croatian goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa. The goal—the first of three—sent the Arena Pernambuco, whose stands were largely populated by El Tri fans, into a frenzy. Also losing his mind was head coach Miguel Herrera, who has become an Internet celebrity for his heart-on-the-sleeve displays of emotion:

But what about the fans back home, those who thought better of selling their homes and vehicles to fund a trip to Brazil? How did they celebrate Mexico’s victory over Croatia? By channeling their inner Miguel Herrera.

Below is security camera footage taken of El Zocalo, the main plaza situated at the heart of Mexico City. In the video below, you can see and hear the reaction to each of the three goals.

And in case you didn’t watch the match, here is Enrique “El Perro” Bermudez, the iconic Mexican commentator, calling the Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado, and Chicharito goals, respectively.
