NASCAR Driver Aric Almirola, also known as “The Cuban Missile,” took DNA’s Derrick Ashong on a spin in a souped-up Ford Mustang pace car at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
“It’s a lot faster than I expected,” Derrick said while riding up to 140 miles per hour. And that’s not even the fastest a NASCAR vehicle can go.
Almirola said an actual race car has 900 horsepower and can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour.
“It’s an exceptional machine,” he said. “And to have the opportunity to drive it and compete at this level is a really good opportunity.”
Amirola, who’s been racing professionally since 2002, has made 12 top tens and one pole position. He most recently placed 18th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series final on the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The Sprint Cup final was won by Jimmie Johnson, a perennial NASCAR champion who has won the race six times.
After his test run in the Mustang, Derrick caught up with Johnson to ask how he has managed to stand out on the circuit.
