As Oscar night fast approaches, Mexicans are gearing up to see what awards The Revenant takes home. But strangely enough, it’s not the Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu people have their eyes on, rather the film’s protagonist, Leonardo DiCaprio.
A Facebook event with more than 17,000 attendants is calling on Mexicans, if DiCaprio wins best actor, to go out into the streets and celebrate at the iconic Angel of Independence monument, a place normally reserved for celebrating major soccer victories. The Mexico City group links to other groups that are organizing similar celebrations in other city centers across the country.
So why do Mexicans care so much about a DiCaprio win? Well, maybe they don’t, really.
The Facebook group is mostly meant as satire to rib the actor for getting nominated often, but never winning. It’s probably unlikely that many people would actually show up if he wins— but you never know.
For the most part, Mexicans seem to be having fun poking at Dicaprio’s alleged Oscar obsession by unleashing a flurry of memes and gifs.
There is also a series of ridiculous polls where people are calling for a new Mexican Revolution if the U.S. actor doesn’t get the Oscar.
Even TNT Latin America is poking fun at Leo:
