“Mission accomplished,” Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted today. “We got him.”
Joaquín Guzmán Loera, or “El Chapo”, has been arrested yet again. After his most recent escape in July, which involved burrowing a mile-long tunnel, many believed he would be on the run forever.
After Peña Nieto tweeted that the country’s most wanted drug lord had been arrested, social media quickly blew up with some creative “El Chapo” memes.
This one is a parody of a controversial 2014 Time magazine cover.
Gotta catch ‘em all. “Shocking: First images of El Chapo’s capture,” the tweet reads.
Another user said that this is what El Chapo’s arrest must have looked like:
“Just waiting for my Uber to the airport.”
“Just sitting here, planning my next escape.”
“We regret to inform you that Chapo has escaped again, for the third time,” a fake presidential tweet reads.
Someone tweeted to the president “We did it!” with a picture of Dora the Explorer and her monkey friend.
“The dollar is at 18 [pesos]. Look, they caught El Chapo.”
Others pictured the president celebrating his victory. “It’s Friday, Pa!”
Others speculated that Donald Trump, whose head Chapo reportedly put a $100 million bounty on after the republican candidate said Mexico sends “drugs, crime and rapists” to the U.S., must be feeling pretty relieved.
And the crown jewel, which is based on this classic: “If you know how I get, why do you invite me.”
“If you know I escape, why do you catch me.”
