For the last two years or so, Jamie xx—producer, DJ and the musical glue holding your favorite brooding yet accessible band, The xx, together—has struck out on his own. He’s traveled the world on an extensive tour of DJing gigs, releasing a series of beautiful EPs and singles—including my favorite song of 2014, “Girl“—along the way.
During his time apart from the band, solo artist Jamie xx recorded a new album full of his reflections on experiencing the world as a solo adult for the first time. In Coulour was released in late May of this year, and for many, it was the soundtrack of the summer*.
This week, Jamie xx and his label, Young Turks, have opened a “Good Times” pop up store in London, named after his song with Young Thug and Popcaan. There, fans can pick up signed copies of In Colour, buy music that Jamie xx sampled in the album, and pick up other exclusive merch. One of the items ready to fulfill your consumer needs is a soccer jersey designed by Umbro.
The jersey’s design flips the diagonal rainbow stripes and confetti theme of In Colour‘s original album artwork and video treatments, and instead features black and white, and more soccer-traditional hoops. Young Turks’ logo appears in place of a club badge. If you happen to be passing by 73 Kingsland Road in London, go get one for yourself. Then get one for me. I’ll send you the cash via PayPal or something.
*Author’s Note: I acknowledge that “soundtrack of the summer” is very corny, but what else am I supposed to say when an artist releases the best “dance” album of the year so close to Memorial Day? It’s not my fault. Blame Jamie xx.
