Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán managed to evade attempts by the military to capture him, but was injured in the process, the Mexican government said Friday.
Guzmán who heads the Sinaloa drug cartel, has been on the run after his brazen escape from prison in July. He fled through a massive tunnel that had been dug directly into his jail cell. His escape caused a major PR headache for the Mexican government and highlighted the corruption plaguing the country in its dealings with the drug cartels.
In recent days, the Mexican military has barreled through a series of villages in the states of Sinaloa and Durango trying to re-capture Guzmán. On Friday, the government acknowledged that it had failed to seize him once more, but said that he was hurt. From the AFP:
“Due to these actions and to avoid his arrest, the fugitive escaped in a hurry (in recent days), which according to the information that was collected, caused him injuries to his leg and face,” the government said in a statement.
“It is important to specify that these injuries were not the product of a direct clash,” it said, without specifying the extent of the injuries or how authorities know he was hurt.
