Paulo Wanchope is a former Derby County, West Ham, Manchester City, and Costa Rica striker. He’s now Costa Rica’s head coach. The Costa Rica U-23s are in the process of trying to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. (In soccer, the Olympics are primarily under-23 players, with three overage players permitted. It’s weird.) Their latest match was against Panama, in Panama City. Wanchope was in attendance.
At the end of the scoreless contest, Wanchope lost his shit. He opened the gate to the field (to talk to the referee?), shoved a ball boy, and then clocked a guy in the face.
Wanchope is 39 years old. He’s also 6-foot-4. The wee man he decided to punch was at a distinct height and reach disadvantage. Nonetheless, he absolutely got the best of the Costa Rica manager.
It’s unclear whether Wanchope will lose his job as a result of the melee, but he should probably be fired for starting a fist fight against a man half his size and losing. That’s not a good look.
UPDATE: Wanchope resigned.
