The idea of a new Chelsea contract uncovers Mourinho’s hip hop soul

Chelsea Football Club of London clinched the Premier League title last weekend, a victory that has left the club’s usually surly manager José Mourinho with a case of the warm and fuzzies. As per usual, his press conference today — ahead of Chelsea’s Sunday match against Liverpool — was full of wonderfully quotable quips, but one particular string of thoughts stood out.

One of the following quotes is from Mourinho, when he was asked about his future with Chelsea and his relationship with club owner Roman Abramovich. The other is the chorus from one of Hip-Hop’s all-time greatest loves songs, as performed by The Roots featuring Erykah Badu. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is which.

“If you were worried about where I’ve been, or who I saw, or what club I went to with my homies; baby, don’t worry. You know that you’ve got me.”

“I am very, very calm. He doesn’t need to be worried, he has me. If he want me to stay, I’m staying. I know he wants me next season, because I am working.”

Whichever one of these sentiments came from José, it’s friggin’ beautiful. I think we all wish we had someone who loved us enough to say something so tender and emotional. In public, no less. That’s a special bond between owner and manager. One no amount of money can break, right now.

Mourinho went on to say the following about a possible contract extension:

“I don’t need a contract. Mr Abramovich needs to be very calm. I am in his hands. I want to stay, I don’t want to leave. I am not asking for a better contract.”

Whooo! Did you feel that spark? This man is in love. With Chelsea. Let’s watch the footage of the conclusion to Mourinho’s press conference.

Rest comfortably, Chelsea fans. Your Special One is in this for the long haul. He’s finally ready to commit to you. For good this time. He’s a changed man. He knows that leaving you to sew his oats with “easy” leagues like Spain was a mistake. He’s ready to stay home and build something real. With you. And Roman. Probably more with Roman, but you’ve definitely crossed his mind once or twice.
