The Intro: Matt Keppel

As you might have read, we’re growing the Fusion tech & product team in 2015. Today we’d like to introduce you to one of our colleagues, Matt Keppel, who helps keep all of our product development efforts on track.

Who are you, and what do you do?

I’ve been working for Fusion since before it was even Fusion!

In the early days, twelve of us updated the Univision News Tumblr from a small conference room in Univision’s offices outside Miami, FL. Three years later, Fusion has gone from a simple Tumblr page to a full blown news network with hundreds of employees.

As a product manager at Fusion, I am a primary liaison between editorial, design and development. Here’s what a day in the life of a product manager looks like:

  1. QA’ing yesterday’s development work.
  2. Drinking coffee.
  3. Standup with developers.
  4. Drinking coffee.
  5. Reviewing success of recently launched features.
  6. Drinking coffee.
  7. Consulting with UX designers on new features.
  8. Drinking coffee.
  9. Planning new features with developers.

What’s your preferred hardware and software setup?

I am an avid Mac user with a movie theater 17” Macbook Pro. Yes, my back pain is real from carrying this monster to and from the office. At work, I use a Mac monitor too, with visuals on the external monitor and Gmail/Drive on the laptop screen.

My software setup corresponds closely to our workflow:

  • Huboard for managing GitHub issues in a visual card stack layout.
  • Slack for team coordination and communication, along with Spotify running in the background to keep me sane throughout the workday.
  • Shout out to Google Drive for keeping all my files in order and sharable with the greater team — huge for me.

How do you consume media? Any favorite formats or publications?

I appreciate a good podcast for the subway ride. With Serial over now, I’ve been listening to This American Life along with Reply All, a new podcast all about the Internet. It’s had some pretty great episodes so far, especially episode #3 We Know What You Did, about the creator of the pop up ad who laments his horrible creation.

I am a fan of physical books over e-readers. Live TV is not something in my life unless it is a sporting event. On Apple TV, I’m all about The Netflix and HBO Go apps.

What excites you most about what’s coming next at Fusion?

Everything about Fusion is exciting! This project has been 3 years in the making for me, with new adventures at every corner.

But, one thing I’m really excited about is the current redesign project. Once our team completes the redesign, we’ll have a blank canvas to create, analyze and improve upon. It’s like starting a new painting with endless possibilities of what Fusion could become.
