Vanessa Hudgens talks ‘Gigi’ on Broadway: “I’ve never worked this hard before”

It’s kind of hard to believe that former Disney star Vanessa Hudgens is just now making her Broadway debut. (We know, right?) After all, she got her start as a full-on celeb thanks to her turn in “High School Musical,” which is, by now, pretty much a classic.

And despite Hudgens’ turn in more dramatic or unexpected roles (hello, “Spring Breakers”) she’s back to being sweet as pie in “Gigi” on Broadway. The stage production follows after a classic 1958 movie musical, centering on a freewheeling young woman living in Paris at the turn of the century.

The main character’s unwillingness to settle down and conform actually mirrors her own, Hudgens told Fusion’s Alicia Menendez. “I relate to Gigi in a massive way,”she said. “[Gigi] doesn’t want to be held down by the social confinements that are applied to her, and that’s kind of how I feel like I am. I’m like, ‘I’m gonna live my life the way I want to, and I’m not gonna play by anyone else’s rules but mine.’”

If anything, Hudgens says, you’ll find an important message in what may look like a not-so-serious song and dance performance. “At the end of the day you have to do what makes you happy,” she said. “Only you are living your life, not anyone else.”
