Live blog, Newcastle vs. Arsenal: No away goals rule

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:55 pm

FT: Newcastle 1 – 2 Arsenal || That was quite the game. How did Newcastle now equalize? How did Newcastle not win by 15? HOW? Here are my final thoughts.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:50 pm

“How much of this can you waste?” That’s the real question.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:46 pm

Newcastle hitting posts, weaving in and around Arsenal players like cones, and generally doing whatever they want. Remy Cabella is causing havoc down the right and Arsenal have approximately zero answers. Unless “please stop it” is an answer.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:43 pm

This is how bad it is for Arsenal. Piers Morgan, folks:

Somehow, Newcastle still haven’t equalized.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:41 pm

What what what what. Cabella marches down through the heart of the Arsenal defense and is met sternly in the box by Koscielny. The referee doesn’t consider the subsequent tumble by Cabella to be a foul.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:30 pm

Newcastle is not playing around. This second half has been an all-out Geordie assault on Arsenal. On all fronts. The better possession, the better chances, the better crimes, all coming from Newcastle.

Stunning reflex save from Ospina. A Newcastle corner is headed toward goal and then flicked by Sissoko, literally right in front of the Arsenal goalkeeper. How he kept it out, I don’t know. Oh wait. It was his hands. Nevertheless, Newcastle are pounding on the door.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:18 pm

Starting to see Arsenal players getting frustrated. Arms are flailing, faces are complaining, body language is turning, the crowd is definitely in it. These are hard times for Arsenal. Newcastle certainly looks like it feels like equalizing.

Mike Ashley update:

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:10 pm

Newcastle 1 – 2 Arsenal || It’s time to start talking about the time Arsenal were up 4-0 against Newcastle at St. James’ Park and then drew 4-4. Because we have to, right?

Cabella came down the right and crossed the ball toward the penalty spot where Captain Sissoko finished sweetly with a first-time shot to the bottom right corner. We have soccer game, folks.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201512:03 pm

Second half has started at St. James’ Park and for some reason, even though Wenger keeps talking about the need to rest Alexis Sanchez, Alexis Sanchez is still out there running around like a madman. Because all he knows how to do is workrate. That’s not a bad thing, but sometimes you need to sit down and relax. It’s science.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:53 am

This type of behavior has already gotten French Jesus into trouble. He needs to be careful.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:49 am

HT: Newcastle 0 – 2 Arsenal || Tim Krul has to be weighing the odds of him scoring from here. It’s time to take risks. The halftime whistle blows and Newcastle fans let the boos fly. Sad times.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:43 am

Lots of Mike Ashley footage today. My guess is that he’s watching cartoons.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:39 am

A decent flurry from Newcastle, bustling around the Arsenal box. They really have little to lose at this point. Ayoze Perez always looks dangerous, but the Arsenal backline has stood firm thus far.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:38 am

These Giroud goals make me wonder if Roy Hodgson is going to try to call him up for the next England squad . He deserves a chance.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:37 am

Have to do this periodically.

Watching Mike Ashley is just about as entertaining as watching Newcastle play.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:35 am

This game’s starting to look a lot like the Manchester City-West Brom game, except Newcastle actually have 11 men out there.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:30 am

Newcastle 0 – 2 Arsenal || He’s done it again. French Jesus has done it again. This time a header beats Krul to the far post. Giroud can only be stopped by himself during first legs of round of 16 Champions League ties.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:28 am

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:28 am

Newcastle 0 – 0 Arsenal || A Cazorla free kick is nodded down by Welbeck and French Jesus finishes with a supple touch. The masses flock.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:24 am

French Jesus (Giroud) puts Aaron Ramsey in on goal, but Ramsey’s touch lets him and Arsenal fans and French Jesus down.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:22 am

Gabriel has looked strong for Arsenal in the back. He replaced Per Mertesacker today. If he can keep up a good level, it’ll be interested to see if Murdersacker/BFG will ever get back into the side. But Gabriel certainly needs a few more tests before we can draw any verdicts. Well, I can draw one verdict: the man will tackle anything that moves.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:17 am

This guy is sending one of those “Please help Send help Save us all” texts.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:15 am

Alexis suffering internal bleeding, probably. Tackles and karate kicks are flying out here.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:13 am

Sammy Ameobi with a swift kick to Alexis’ ribs earns Arsenal a free kick. That’s one way to try to stop the Chilean machine. Nothing comes of the free kick.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:12 am

Near the top of the long list of “needs to be stopped”: Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley (middle).

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:07 am

If those Newcastle fans looked desperate for a party, these Arsenal fans aren’t in much better shape.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:03 am

This game has started off like a pack of wild dogs were kept in a box and were just let out. There will be no bus parking or tactics, it seems. Just pure, unadulterated soccerball. Both managers probably just told their teams, “Come on, lads,” and then clapped furiously.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201511:00 am

The atmosphere at St. James’ Park is electric.

And we’re off …

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201510:59 am

This is true. But let’s not talk about the chances Giroud has missed.

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201510:57 am

Arsenal’s XI:

Newcastle’s XI:

Miriti Murungi March 21, 201510:55 am

Coming off of its sad departure from European competition, Arsenal travel to Newcastle to try to focus on the league. Newcastle, on the other hand, will try to continue its uninterrupted run of focusing on the league. Points are at stake, probably. What will happen? Will there be uncomfortable Arsene Wenger close-ups? Stay tuned.
